A Word About the Merle Chihuahua Much has been written concerning the breeding of merle Chihuahuas, much of it condemning the practice and defaming the merle breeder. The appearance of the merle color pattern in the coats of Chihuahuas is a relatively new occurrence which geneticists feel is not a mutation but the result of the cross-breeding of the Chihuahua with another breed, quite possibly the Dachshund. The merle color pattern is the result of a gene which causes splashes of lighter color to appear in the naturally darker coat of the Chihuahua. This similar color pattern can be seen in the Australian Shepherd, some Collies, dapple Dachshunds, etc. Improperly bred merle Chihuahuas can produce defective puppies with eye and ear problems (i.e., blindness, deafness, or both). Reputable breeders of merle Chihuahuas, such as Daisy Lane Kennels, are careful not to mate Chihuahua males and females that would produce such defects. However, you should know that there is constant conflict within the circle of Chihuahua breeders over the breeding of this controversial genetic color patterning. At Daisy Lane Kennels we want you to be well informed on these issues. We do not wish to deny those owners who wish to own one, or more, of these beautiful Chihuahuas, but rest assured we will inform you, to the best of our ability, of the presence of any merle ancestry in a pup you are buying. We will further urge you to spay or neuter your merle Chihuahua so that no possibility of genetic accidents can occur. |
