FEMALE Contrary to popular opinion the male Chihuahua makes a very loving, happy, dependable and carefree pet with a desire to please it's owner, whereas the female Chihuahua tends to have an "I'd rather do it my way" attitude, & can be fiercely independent, with a "take it or leave it" attitude toward it's owner. Both are loving but the female is loving on her terms! Many do not wish a male dog because of the tendency to "lift it's leg"...properly & patiently trained and perhaps neutered early, the male has no more tendency to "mark" than the female would.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT "TEACUP" CHIHUAHUAS "Teacup" is a coined word adopted by the public to describe the very tiny Chihuahua.  Reputable breeders will tell you there is no such thing as a "teacup", they merely are the runts of the litter.  These tiny dogs have gained popularity due to their ready accommodation  to a small carrier, purse, etc., and the owner's ability to take them many places one would not venture to take a larger dog, (i.e., the bank, beauty shop, restaurants, movies, etc.). However, it must be noted that due to their size these tiny Chihuahuas are more prone to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).   Basically, it is very important that they eat several small meals daily.  They cannot go long without being fed.  Sometimes people mistake them for tiny toys and hold them for too long, denying them rest, food and water.  They are, and always will be, like babies and they need time to sleep, eat and drink. If these tiny Chihuahuas do not get adequate food and rest you will notice them becoming lethargic.  They will not be able to stand on their own.  These are the first signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It is a good idea to have on hand Nutri-Cal or Nutri-Stat, available at most pet and feed stores, and online.  These products are supplements that should be given to any small dog in distress from hypoglycemia.  In the case of the tiny Chihuahua it can be a life saving act to give one of these supplements immediately upon seeing any signs of hypoglycemia.   These supplements can also make the transition from life at Daisy Lane to your home go more smoothly.  You will have read the article I supply outlining what hypoglycemia is, and how it is treated.  If you did not receive your copy with your purchase of a Daisy Lane Chihuahua be sure to ask me for it.  Another hazard for the tiny Chihuahua is their fragility.  They are just so tiny that they can suffer fractures easily.  They cannot survive jumps, drops or falls.   They must not run around your home like any other dog.  They need to have their own safe place, albeit a crate or playpen.  Larger dogs can be a hazard for any small dog, however the tiny Chihuahua is especially vunerable.  Even another Chihuahua that outweighs the tiny dog can cause bodily injury to your pup.  You may expect your tiny Chihuahua to have a shorter life span than that of the standard size, and larger Chihuahuas, as they suffer more medical problems and accidents.   Do YOU really want a tiny Chihuahua? then be prepared to care for it as you would a human baby.
